Carting Lane, WC2 in London features the city's only surviving Victorian sewer gas destructor lamp, humorously nicknamed "Farting Lane" by locals. Invented by Joseph Webb in the 1890s, the lamppost was designed to draw up and burn off foul-smelling methane gas from the sewers below. These arches are part of Shell-Mex House.
