About David
David Banes is a British photographer drawn to the quieter, easily overlooked moments of everyday life.
He used film in a Zenit-E with a Helios 58mm lens in his early years, but family and working life (as a cartographer and draughtsman) got in the way. However, he always maintained an interest in architecture, black-and-white images, and digital imaging with early computers, until digital cameras of reasonable quality arrived in the late 1990s. These early analog and digital experiences influence his photographic work today.
Much of his photography is made while walking — through the Chilterns and Buckinghamshire countryside, along canals and waterways, or through towns and city streets. His eye is often caught by the things others might simply pass by: a solitary figure, an empty chair, the geometry of a building, mist across a familiar landscape, or the way light and shadow briefly transform an ordinary place.

Working predominantly in square-format black and white, David's photographs favour atmosphere and observation over technical perfection. Grain, deep shadows and occasional movement are all part of a deliberately understated, film-inspired aesthetic.
His work brings together three recurring themes: Ordinary Britain, observing people, places and fleeting everyday moments; Light & Structure, exploring shape, shadow, geometry and repetition; and Quiet Places, finding atmosphere and stillness in the landscape and overlooked corners of Britain.
